Lucerne pest

(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM, March 16. A sap-sucking aphis which attacks lucerne crops is now, well established in the Marl-' borough area. The aphis wasj first noticed in Marlborough last week, but it is thought that it has been in the area for as long as it has been ini the lower half of the North Island, where it was first noticed. The managing director of U.E.B. Marlborough Protein: Limited (Mr J. Cunningham), said he was worried about the effects of the aphis on the lucerne meal industry, but there was no panic. "We've dealt with infestations in the crop before, and this particular one has been established overseas for some years, and they’ve been able to manage.” A Ministry of Agriculture spokesman in Blenheim said lucerne crops in the Awatere and Kaikoura areas were being inspected. It was not yet known how far south the aphis had spread. Almost every farm growing lucerne in Marlborough had been affected. There was very little information about the aphis in New Zealand, he said. Lottery draw.— . Jackpot Lottery No. 85 will be drawn n Wellington tomorrow. The lackpot now stands at 537,000.—(P. A.)
