Railcar services
Sir, — New Zealand is trying to build up a tourist trade. The West Coast of the South Island is acknowledged as a scenic wonder of the world. We have an alternative scenic route with different views by rail, so the Government in its wisdom decides to close this route to passengers. The scenery on the bus route is also well I worth looking at but there are many nervous travellers who will not drive, or be driven through mountainous country. Therefore, are they to miss this scenic treat? Far better to upgrade the rail service, advertise it more widely, especially overseas. This way will bring in more tourist revenue to help our railways
pay their way. — Yours, etc.,
Z. TE RAKI. March 14, 1976.
