HIGH SCORERS
Two of the finest goalkickers in the history of inter-club rugby league in Canterbury, Trevor Williams (Hornby) and Mike O’Donnell (Marist-Western Suburbs), are poised to become the first players to exceed 1000 points in career aggregates later this year. Williams should be the first to beat the present record of 990 held by Jim Hawthorne, who was a prolific scorer for Papanui, Marist and ChristchurchEastern Suburbs. In spite of missing many matches last season, Williams extended his over-all total to 964 points, comprising 23 tries, 447 goals, and one field goal. On four occasions he has passed a
century within a season,: his highest being 183 in 1970. Williams made his debut in the Hornby first XIII in 1965. but was not its firstchoice kicker until after the retirement of lan Drayton. O'Donnell, in contrast, started only in 1970. provided Marist with 98 points that year, and the highest of his five subsequent centuries were 190 in 1973 and 189 in 1972. In all. O'Donnell has an inter-club aggregate of 902, from 40 tries and 391 goals. He has served Marist well as a centre, fullback and stand-off half, while Williams — alternating between full-back and the forwards — has been even more versatile.
