GREYHOUND RACING Small — but select — open class field

(By

BOB SCHUMACHER)

Only five starters are listed for the Bond Street open event in the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrowevening, but they are among the speediest dogs in competition and it should prove a memorable race.

Hobb’s Galore, unbeaten in three starts at the park, has the ace draw, and the Old Hobbs-Trudy Galore bitch is certain to set a blistering pace if she jumps best. It will be the biggest test for Hobb’s Galore so far, but the track record-holder over 540 m — she set the record at 32.65ec at her first appearance and has since equalled it — has ample speed and stamina. Although drawn on the outside, Shady Havoc should not be inconvenienced by box five as she is an exceptionally brilliant starter. If the Planet-Debbie Havoc bitch beats Hobb’s Galore to the first corner, she might be hard to head.

After failing to qualify for the final of the New Zealand championship. Shady Havoc has raced twice at the park and won both times. In winning the Bond Street open last month, the black bitch easily accounted for Rex Havoc and Rise and Shine, the national champion. Rex Havoc will again be a threat. He, too, is a noted good beginner and should stay prominent from box two. The litter brother to Shady Havoc is an honest chaser but seems unable to

produce added dash at the finish.

Red Shadow, a newcomer ito open class, will be watched with considerable interest. He has progressed through the grades at a remarkable rate. The Irish Rover-Rosearna dog did not start his racing career until January, but has reached top company after four wins from five starts.

Red Shadow’s winning times have not been startling, but he has given the impression that he has only chased as hard as has been necessary to win. Tiger Moss completes the field, but the Old Hobbs-Moss Patches dog seems safely held, although he ran well to finish second to Bomb’s Away in a heat of the Harding Cup last month.

The limit class race should also be absorbing. Two classy dogs from Gordon Kingston’s kennels, Miss Print and Silver Knight, oppose each other for the first time, and they have to contend with a swift starter, Desert Fox.
