No interest in matches

Interest in the premier interclub table tennis has completely waned. One contest in the penultimate round last evening was won by default and the other three contests were played with far more haste than usual.

Last evening’s matches had no bearing on the summer championship. Avonside I clinched the competition last week and, with its easy win against Avonside 11, it has a lead of eight points — one of the biggest margins for many seasons. Dallington 11, with its absent players presenting plausible excuses, was forced to default to Riecarton 11. J t , Avonside in gained the first clean sweep of the season when it beat a much below-strength Dallington I without conceding a match. J Stephen Adamson fared best of the Dallington players and onlv lost 19-21 in the third game to Richard Dixon, who is ranked one place ahead of him in the Canterbury junior seedlings.

His older brother, Grant, captured the second game from Bert Thompson at ' advantage points, but the wily Thompson made no race of the deciding game. Avonside I was just as convincing in beating Avonside 11. the top team dropping only one doubles. Les Stewart maintained his outstanding form to win his three singles in straight games, and Harry Redmond dropped just the one game to Graeme Main.

Maurice Burrowes, reappearing after missing three rounds, was also unbeaten, although the top-ranked Canterbury player seemed short of practice as he lost the first games to Main and John Yates.

The only contest to create anv real interest was between Riecarton 1 and University. With only the final doubles remaining, the University pair, Yee Chow Boi and Tai Teik Yaw, had to win the match in straight games to draw’ the match.

It appeared a reasonable chance as Yee had earlier won his three singles and Tai. a newcomer to A grade, had revealed promise In previous encounters. But Harry Holt and Colin Tipper, both of whom had performed well in their singles, were equal to the occasion and won the doubles in straight games to seal Riccarton’s victory.
