Waldheim denies failure
t.v.z Press Assn —Copyright) SYDNEY. February 8. The United Nations Secretary-General (Dr Kurt Waldheim) has dismissed suggestions that; the United Nations mis-; sion to East Timor has: failed. Dr Waldheim told a press: conference soon after his; arrival at Sydney that his! special envoy. Mr Vittorio' Winspeare-Guicciardi. would remain available to visit: Fretilin-held territory in East) Timor should the opportunity I arise. Dr Waldheim gave his! press conference after con-[ ferring with his envoy im- 1 mediately on his arrival at Sydney for a four-day visit. Mr Winspeare arrived in i Sydney on Saturday from Darwin where he has been unsuccessfully trying to arrange safe passage into East Timor. Dr Waldheim said the United Nations had asked Australia for help in contacting Fretilin and the request had been met. But he said Australia had: indicated it would not pro-[ vide a plane to take Mr Win- ■ speare to Timor because there had been no guarantee of security. Dr Waldheim was wel- ! corned at the airport by a demonstration of about 20 Cypriots protesting at what thev saw as lack of United Nations action during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus; in 1974. : Another demonstration is planned by the Campaign for Independent East Timor, outside Sydney’s Wentworth Hotel, where Dr Waldheim will be attending a United Nations Association dinner. .Members of the campaign said they would picket the hotel in protest at the Indonesian invasion of East! Timor, and to demand i stronger action from the j United Nations in demanding Indonesian withdrawal from East Timor. ;
