Surprise ‘call’ bowls booths
Two public telephone boxes at the intersection of Bealey Avenue and Colombo Street were demolished when a car crashed into them about 11 p.m. on Saturday.
The car struck the booths after glancing off a traffic light stand about 20ft away on the median strip of Bealey Avenue.
The accident was attended by the police, but it was not known last evening whether the occupants of the car were injured.
No-one was in the booths at the time.
Several sets of traffic lights in Bealey Avenue were put out of action early yesterday when a second car hit a traffic light stand at the intersection of Bealev Avenue and Manchester Street, No other vehicle was involved in the accident, which happened about 12.30 a.m.
The car was driven away from the scene, but was later found at a city address bv Ministry of Transport officers. It was severely damaged by the impact, which bent the metal stand.
Charges would probably be laid against the driver of the car, a Ministry spokesman said. All sets of traffic lights In Bealey Avenue were working again by last evening.
