Stockwell and Jesson wrap up cycling

Blair Stockwell and Paul Jesson made no race of the cycling season’s First Madison, at Denton Park last evening.

Partly because fields were reduced by scratchings, partly because of their own very impressive form, the two Olympic nominees took a lap out of the field before half the time had been used. And by the end of the 56lap (22.4 km race. Jessen and Stockwell had nearly earned another lap and had 31 points into the bargain.

There was almost more interest in the race for second. Gary and Lin Sword held an early points advantage, but Ivan Steele and Frank Schaapveld won the final sprint by a wheel to clinch the runner-up place.

With the amateur numbers so reduced, a great deal of atention was again focused on the novices and none had such an impressive ride as Shane Smith. In very unpleasant conditions on Wednesday. Smith turned in 2min 15.5 sec for the 1600 m station pursuit. Last evening, he went 2min 12.9 sec, which compared [very well with Garry Monk’s season’s best time of 2tnin 11.7 sec.
