SEARCH CALLED OFF

DUNEDIN. Jan. 11. The search for the body of a Dunedin man who was drowned on Friday evening while fishing off the rocks on the Otago Peninsula has been called off. The missing man. James Enc Callaghan, aged 33. maned with three children, fell from a ledge, near Puddingstone Rock, from which* he was fishing about 6 p.m. His companion jumped into the water to help him. Both got into difficulty and were

swept away by the strong rip. The companion’s body , was recovered about 8.45 p.m. about a mile away’ and’; out to sea. He was Allan Keogh, aged 43, mar-; ried, with three children.; Mr Keogh was in charge; of the printing department of the University of Otago and’ l Mr Callaghan was a! colleague. Five policemen and three’ others persons resumed their! shore search at 5 a.m. on Saturday. A Port Chalmers fishing boat, the Anna Dee, left Taiaroa Heads at 4 a.m. on Saturday to search the sea off Cape Saunders, but visibility was poor and there was a 15ft swell, forcing the vessel to head back to port at 10 a.m.
