Kialoa breaks record

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The 79ft American ketch Kialoa finished the Hobart to Auckland yacht race shortly after 9.13 a.m. yesterday. The 73ft American yawl Windward Passage finished the race just under three hours : later at 12.9 p.m.

As Windward Passage crossed the finish line, the 73ft Australian yacht Ballyhoo, which had cruised across the Tasman, rather than race, was proceeding up harbour for a customs clearance. The New Zealand 7.3footer, Buccaneer (T. E. Clark) was the third yacht to finish the race at 6.33 p.m. Kialoa’s elapsed time of 7 days 19 hours 13 minutes 14 seconds for the 1570-mile race was a new race record. Windward Passage’s time of 7 days 22 hours 9 minutes 8 seconds was also within the old record time of 8 days 2 hours 10 minutes 28 seconds set by Kialoa II in 1972.

On corrected times, Windward Passage had Kialoa beaten, but the handicap win for the race will in all probability be taken by one of the smaller yachts still sailing down the coast.
