HASTINGS (England).

Wolfang Uhlmann of East Germany held his half-point lead in ” the Hastings international chess tournament on Saturday with a quick eleventh round draw against second-placed Vlastimil Hort of Czechoslovakia.

The game was over in only 11 moves. Meanwhile, the two Soviet grand masters, David Bronstein and Victor Korchnoi, fought against each other in a struggle to catch up with the leaders.

After four hours play, Bronstein won a pawn but Korchnoi put up a determined resistance. When the game was adjourned it looked as though Bronstein would find it difficult to force the win. The Icelandic grand master, Gudmundur Sigurjonsson, soon gained an advantage against the European junior champion, John Nunn of Britain. He won a pawn and also enjoyed a positional advantage with two powerful bishops bearing down on the enemy. But just before the end of the session he committed a bad error, lost back the pawn, and had to concede to. the draw.
