'Police help needed’

N.Z Press Association

NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. lb Direct police assistance is needed by local bodies to help enforce by-laws, the vice-president of the Municipal Association and the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr D. V. Sutherland) said today. He said that there were bylaws which could deal with gangs which took up residence in quiet neighbourhoods, but local authorities by themselves had no hope of making the laws work.

He welcomed the comment of the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) that it was now up to the legislators to untie the hands of local authorities in dealing with gang problems.

"I don’t see this as passing the buck to the total authorities. Rather, it seems that more will be done to enlist the help of the police to make the existing by-laws effective,” he said.
