Conflict on Games opening

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) QUEBEC, Jan. 11. The Queen has been told that it would be “inappropriate” for her to open the Montreal Olympic Games in July. The Queen has been sent a letter by a Quebec political opposition group. Parti Quebecois, suggesting that she decline to open the Games.

The letter was sent by a Quebec National Assembly member for Lafontaine and the Parti Quebecois party whip, Marcel Leger. In the message Mr Leger says: “The eyes of the entire world will be turned on Quebec and your participation in this symbolic ceremony would give a false impression of the Quebec reality. “We are convinced that our sentiments represent those of the large majority of Quebec citizens who alone have organised this international event and who alone are bearing the cost.” The letter adds: “Quebec’s people will be happy to welcome you in Montreal as head of the Commonwealth and Queen of the United Kingdom if you hand over the prestige of opening the Montreal Games to one of the numerous other heads of State.” In a statement issued with the letter, Mr Leger said he failed to see why the Canadian and Quebec governments asked the Queen to open the Olympics.
