Quiet trading on firm Australian market
Share prices closed on a marginally firmer, note in subdued trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday.
Traders noted that the session- was a carry-over from Thursday’s lack-lustre performance which saw the recent advance slow down noticeably. B.H.P. showed a modest 2c improvement at 710 c, but this was overshadowed by the gains recorded by E.Z. Industries, the C.8.C., and Philip Morris. Some minor rises were also made by 1.C.1., Herald W.T., the Wales, 1.A.C., Jennings and Woolworths. CSR was steady along with Coles, Lend Lease and Comalco, but. 8.M.1., T.N.T., the National Bank, Grace Bros and Elders G.M. were weaker. On the mining boards, Hamersley, Peko-Wallsend, Poseidon, Kathleen, Hamersley and Woodside-Burmah all eased. However, Pancontinental, Queensland Mines, Consolidated Gold and Magellan recorded gains. Coals were again vulnerable. Coal and Allied lost 10c at 220 c, although Gollin improved a cent at 20c.
