LANGUAGE BARRIER
Language difficulties are the main problem facing a Bulgarian refugee family who have just arrived in Christchurch. Mr Janko Jankov, aged 29, his wife Violeta, aged 24, and their 2|-year-old daughter Daniele, speak no English, and Mr Richard Leach, of the Spreydon Baptist Church, which is sponsoring the family’s stay in Christchurch, speaks no Bulgarian. However, Mr Leach is getting through to them
with some written Russian and German and the help of another Bulgarian family who arrived in Christchurch a year ago. But interpretation is proving a long and involved process. Mr Leach hopes Mr Jankov will soon know enough English to get a job. He is a trained metal-work technician. The Jankovs, who are Orthodox Christians, escaped from Bulgaria
where their church is officially closed. Mr Jankov escaped to Austria in June, 1974, and his wife and daughter followed in July, 1975. With the help of the World Council of Churches, which lent them $lOOO for their fare, they arrived in Christchurch on Wednesday night. Mrs Jankov, trained in both Eastern and Western ' philosophies, is a computer operator, stenographer, and economist.
