Message of sympathy
WELLINGTON, January 9. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has sent a message of sympathy to the Chinese Government over the death of the Chinese Prime Minister (Chou En Lai) today. It reads: “It is with great regret that I have learned of the death of Premier Chou En Lai. On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand I should like to express my deep sympathy to you and all the Chinese people. “The death of Premier Chou En Lai removes a statesman of international stature from the world scene and marks the loss of one of China’s most outstanding leaders. “New Zealanders know of Premier Chou as a man of great dignity and vision. We have long acknowledged his expertise in matters of foreign policy and his abilities as an administrator. “His service to his country and people will long be remembered.” (World reaction, page 13.)
