Roller skating records fall

Deane Landret It (Rollerdrome), in the juvenile boys 200 m. and Manawatu. in the senior lien’s relay, set new rational records at the New Zealand roller skatn£ championships which finished at Canterbury Court last evening-. Both the juvenile 200 m speed events went as expected. Joanne Porteous (Levin) led all the way to win the girls’ title and Deane Landreth did likewise in the boys* event. The relays provided exciting racing, especially in the women’s 1500 m. The strength of the Rollerdrome team, Karen TreJoar. gained a use-: ful break before she swapped, but Cheryl Millar drifted to last before Jennifer Treloar moved into action. Jennifer Treloar kept the fast pace but she was involved in an elbowing contest ■ which continued for 200 m. j Karen Treloar was respon- 1 sible for covering the last laps and she did that in fine fashion to give Rollerdrome a thrilling win when she cut inside ihe Manawatu skater. Judith Crozier, two laps from, the finish. The Rollerdrome team. I however, was disqualified probably because of Jennifei Treloar’s strong actions, and Manawatu was awarded first place in record time. *’ The men's final deservedly /went to Manawatu also. In the I heats. the three Manawatu j ; skaters—Stephen and Brian Carwell-Cooke and Leslie Phil pott—finished inside tiie old reI cord b> 3.Bsec when they re-1 corded 6min I.ssec. Against the strong Hawke's Bay and Hastings teams in the final, they went even faster and won convincingly in 6 in in I.Osec.
