Unemployment up in Aust.
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA. Jan. 9. Australia is facing its worst unemployment. At the end of December the number of jobless had rocketed to 328,705 — 5.6 per cent of the labour force. The figures were issued in Canberra today by the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations (Mr Tony Street). They show the level was boosted substantially by school-leaver unemployment, which increased bv 41,294 to 60,249. The total
increase over the month was 63.138. Seasonally adjusted, the level of unemployment fell, but the Australian Statistics Bureau has insisted that the figures are understated. They show that during December unemployment dropped by 1256 to 286,923. or 4.8 per cent of the labour force. Unemployed excluding school leavers declined bv 4194. to 267,768. But even after seasonal adjustment, school-leaver unemployed increased bv 2938, to 19,155.
