Unions’ stand on wages
Many unions have signed a petition to the I ederation of Labour advising that they will call on their union members <o indicate to the
Government and employers that they will not be prepared, as wage earners, to accept the whole burden of New Zealand’s economic difficulties.
The secretary of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr F. E. McNulty), announcing the move, said that, in view of recent statements by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) that the next wage order would not compensate for the rise in the cost of living, many trade union officials strongly opposed any cut by the Government in wage increases due to their members.
Mr McNulty said the unions were asking that the cost-of-living wage increase fully compensate workers for inflation.
