Cyclists show the flag

Brightly-coloured flags on long poles have been sprouting from behind many Christchurch cyclists recently. Sales of the devices, known as “chopper-guards,” have been steady since they were introduced. Th“y are intended to contribute to road safety by making the cyclist more readily visible to motorists. The flags, which are attached to the rear of the bicycle, have been approved by the Ministry of Transport.

Similar devices have been available in the United States for some time. Those on sale in New Zealand are marketed by an oil company on behalf of the Auckland manufacturer.
