Diver says wreck not gold ship

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 8. A Paihia diver, Mr Kelly Tarlton, believes the wreck at the Auckland Islands that Commander John Grattan and his party plan to search is not the General Grant. He said that divers should not recover anything from the wreck the Grattan expedition was heading for as a plaque was nailed to it claiming first salvage rights. While working with

Commander Grattan last year, Mr Tarlton dived to the wreck that the present expedition is heading for.

He said that he had found a number of objects on that wreck which indicated it was a ship built 20 or 30 years after the General Grant sank.

“I didn’t go on this expedition because I don’t believe the wreck is the General Grant,” he said.
