Australians beat Newport
(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright) NEWPORT, Wales.
Australia again proved provincial games are no real problem in Britain with a 13-7 rugby win against Newport yesterday.
The Australians won through a grand second half try to Gary Pearse and three penalty goals by Jim Hindmarsh, to a try and a penalty goal from Newport.
The Australians ran to a 9-nil lead early in the second half, and although their performance was by no means a commanding one, it was still sound enough to keep the match safe. The defence was superb, and their ability to withstand pressure was sorely tested.
Newport had a powerful scrum, which took a flood of possession and made it very difficult for the Australians early in the game, but they were very quick about the field nevertheless.
Flanker Gary Pearse again had a strong game in both attack and defence. He backed up industriously and kept up with long breaks by Jim Hindmarsh and John Ryan to score the Australian trv 10 minutes from the finish.
