Holiday traffic lighter
Canterbury traffic was very much lighter during the Christmas-New Year period than in previous , years, according to the Ministry of Transport. The regional director (Mr ,J. F. Thomas) said that | although the holiday camps and beaches had been well attended. holidaymakers used their cars less than [usual after they arrived. : "They did not seem to; [travel as much when they got! • there.” he said. This tendency has also: been noticed in the North! Island, where the automobile! associations found that there was less traffic movement ini holiday centres than had' been expected. ; Mr Thomas said that • although the tendency was' [probably partly caused by [higher petrol prices, bad; [weather had also contributed! to it. The Ministry of Works (makes a road count of the ■ traffic on some Canterbury .highways, but the results [will not be available for| I several months.
