POLICE CAR IN ACCIDENT

A man was taken to Christchurch Hospital last evening with injuries he suffered when a police car and the car he was driving collided on the intersection of St Asaph and Colombo Streets about 9 p.m.

He is John Edwards, of 34 Redruth Avenue, Spreydon.

He was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance with leg injuries and lacerations. He was in a fair condition last evening and improving.

Mr Edwards's car was damaged on the right-hand side and had its front window smashed. The police car had a large dent in the bonnet.

Two other police cars were waiting for repairs after accidents in the city recently, a police spokesman said.

It was a wonder there were not a lot more accidents involving police cars considering the number of miles they covered during an eight-hour shift, he said.

During the last few months police cars had been involved in a large number of accidents, he said.
