Youth brass gets its annual polish
The .National Youth Brass Band is in Christchurch for two weeks of rehearsals at Lincoln College before touring the country.
While in Christchurch the band will make a half-hour television pro- : gramme with TV2 and will record three halfhour radio programmes. Members of the band, aged between 13 and 19. have come from as far as Auckland and Invercargill to take part. Forty-five players from 27 bands were chosen from 180 nominations. At Lincoln, the band will rehearse from 8-30 am. to 9 p.m. under the control of the musical director. Mr Gilbert Morrison. This year there are four girls in "the band—one more than last year. The manager of the band. Mr E. J. Orrnrod. said that the band had had several
offers to tour overseas. Musk* festival organisers in Switzer-1 land. America. England, andj Australia had asked them toi participate, but the cost! would be prohibitive. "It would probably cost; $lOO,OOO to send the band;

marches and perform in shopping malls; the first concert will be in the Northlands shopping centre on Friday, February 16. Accompanying the band on tour will be Mr Orrnrod. Mr Morrison, the assistant musical director. Mr T. Bremner. and the drum-major, Mr J. Manning, of Timaru. Mr Bremner was formerly a
member of the Woolston Brass Band and is now a member of the New Plymouth City Band.
