Progress on the repairs ! to the second of three i United States Navy Hercules aircraft which crashed on take-off at Dome C, in Antarctica, after a nose ski gave way, is ahead of schedule. Twenty civilians are working on the damaged nose cone and ski sections. A new nose cone and ski have been fitted, and Navy officials are (confident that the aircraft will be flown back to Mci Murdo Station in about two ’weeks, 10 days earlier than; planned. The civilians have found that the electrical systems jwere damaged more seriously than at first thought, but are making excellent progress on the repairs. When the aircraft is flown from Dome C. it will have to make a ski landing on the ;“ski-way” on the edge of the Ross ice shelf. The ice runway at McMurdo field was closed on December 31, about 10 days later than usual, because the ice had begun to break up.
