The citation received by Dr Williams said that the award had been made “for his achievements in the field I of education and authorship, particularly in compiling and ! editing two volumes of ‘Economic Geology of New Zealand* in 1965 and 1974. and •in the former case, for his; work in writing the greater' part of the volume.” i Dr Williams served as!' to establish a geological sur- , vey under a United Nations grant. He returned in 1971 to settle in Nelson. In 1972. he was appointed Dean Emeritus of the University of Otago. When he came to Nelson, IDr Williams set about revising and updating "Economic 'Geology' of New Zealand” The revised edition was published in 1974. The book gives a comprehensive coverage of the use ■ ful minerals of New Zealand and their prospecting history
