Surprises in squash

There were two’ surprise results, both top seeds beaten, in the third annual ; Oceanside Hotel squash i tournament which ended at I Mount Maunganui on New Year’s Eve. Two New Zealand representatives played out a mammoth final in the men’s A grade contest. M. Lilley (New Plymouth) beating the top seed, Bruce Brownlee (Rotorua). 9-6. 9-3. 2-9, 9-10, 9-1. The match took just on two hours to play. The women's A grade final saw the national junior women’s champion, Annette Owen (Royal Oak), the No. 1 seed, beaten by the former New Zealand representative, Vervies McCausland (Te Puke), 2-9. 10-9, 9-1, 9-6.
