Bitch wins greyhound title by 5 lengths

B

BOB SCHUMACHER)

Rise and shine, the little hrindle and white hitch, combined sharp early *peed with vast stamina to race away with the New Zealand grey hound championship at Queen Elizabeth II Park <>n Saturday evening. The P';anet-Debbie Havoc bitch, owned and trained at Oxford by the husband and wife team of Peter and Lois Henley. has proved a great little chaser throughout her career. Recently 'urned two years. Pise and Shine, wh'ch impressively won her heat earlier in the week, rocketed out of box four and had four iengths on the field entering the back straight. She held her advantage down the long straight and Lois Henley, sitting alone in the main stand, felt confident for the first time when she swung around the home bend still clear bv four lengths. Rise and Shine gave her trainers no further cause for concern. She maintained her strong gallop to the finish, winning by five lengths and • rearing a track record of 32.8 sec for the 540 m. Lob*?l Moss, the fastest qualifier in 32 9se«- in the heats, ran a gallant race for second although she had no chance against the winner. The dark hrindle Cardigan Moss—Apache II bitch had to sprint hard initially from her wide draw to move into a prominent position. Her chances were not helped when Beni Ulid, which had the advantage of the inside box, stayed with her down the back straight and prevented her from crossing to the rail. Lobell looked assured of second half-way down the home straight, but Beni Ulid dived *gain on the inside and failed b 1 the narrowest of margins to recapture the second placing. Beni Old's run delighted his t”ainer. Bill Gill, especially since the big Cardigan Moss—Keenset •log has been restricted in his recent racing. The rest of the field never reached challenging positions. The Invercargi'l owned and trained bitch, Berlinetta. made her customary late dab for fourth ahead of the big white Kdison Record dog. Farloc. Black Foot finished sixth, well ciear of Hawkesmor Emma and Real Success. Rise and Shine, which had won the New Zealand Breeders Stakes in Auckland last Easter, will now be prepared for the New Zealand Invitation Stakes >t Taranaki on January 3- After that race, she will be set for the Auckland Cup. The main worry for the Henleys was before, rather than during, the championship final. “I was a little concerned that «he had drawn box four and <night get squeezed if Lobell ’ Moss (a noted brilliant beginner; crossed over quickly at the first bend,” said Mrs Henley. Those fears proved ill founded as Rise •nd Shine turned on the earlv acceleration and had a troublefree run. CONSOLATION EVENTS The Dunedin trained. Commanche. a strong dog bv Broken Knight from Olden Sky, jumped splendidly from the outside box, escaped the skirmish at the first turn in which two runners fell, and cleared out from a strong field. Red Baron, the 1974 New Zealand champion, was a long way back early, but made ground rapidly to gather in Timmy Havoc in the home straight. Shadv’ Havoc, a litter sister to Rise and Shine, won the second consolation after a dour duel with Bomb’s Away for most of the race. Swell Time made a spirited bid along the rails to edge Bombs Away out of second. It was a good run by Shady Havoc and a considerable improvement on her run in the heats when she was worn down b; Real Success. A blanket would have covered the first four dogs at the finish of the puppy stakes. Biack Annith. in the middle early, finished best to catch Gumboots •nd Flying C inders near the line. Silver Knight was in no danger of losing the progressive distance after thwarting an early challenge . by Kapiti. and Stewart s Pride flashed home I from fourth at the top of the straight: to win the maiden final. 1 V brilliant beginning gave

i Lightning Flash victory over the •strong finishers, Miss Print and Set Forth, in the second progressive race. Desert Fox, Black Nugget, and Wakanui Lass won the final events on the programme, all with powerful finishes. A crowd lof more than 2000 made the ! Christchurch club’s first equalisa- - tor meeting at the stadium a great success. Results:— Gilpin puppy stakes (340 mi—- . Annith (C. S. Consent and Mrs Co use ns; trainer, C.
