Southland Guineas for Washdyke winners
A start in the Southland Guineas with, perhaps, a Trentham campaign to follow, is planned for Thomas Mellay, a brilliant winner of the St Andrews High-weight at : Washdyke on Saturday. Thomas Mellay is un-l beaten in two starts in the colours of Mr Phil Heffernan, who is now living in retirement in Christchurch after farming in Southland for many years. Mr Heffernan purchased Thomas Mellay from Mr andi Mrs R. S. Cowie last month,! and at first intended to train
the Mellay colt himself at. Riccarton. But because he : had been in indifferent; health he decided to place the chestnut with Michael McCann. ! McCann won on Thomas Mellay at the Canterbury I Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting. He engaged the southern jockey, Ron Weaver, for Thomas Mellay : on Saturday and this comfa i n a t i o n triumphed: brilliantly by two lengths; after drifting to the tail of! the field at the start. Cappello is now in class two. and will probably run in the Waikouaiti Cup on January 1.
