The groom was on Manama, a small island off the coast of Saudi Arabia, and friends and relations in California. Utah, Arkansas and Arizona listened tn to the ceremony on their home phones. The bride the former Miss Beth Duffy of Bethesda. Maryland, iater cut a simple wedding cake. Written in icing on the top was the message "Wish you were here." The groom, a civil engineer. Steve Spense. did not reveal his celebration plans. The new Mrs Spense said the couple had long wanted to be married on Christmas Eve. But Steve could not get leave to return home and the couple could not afford to marry on Manama, which has a tradition that the en tire communitv must attend al! nuptials. “I think I always pictured a small. famil- wedding, ana 1 guess this was pretty close to it," Mrs Spense said before flying off to join her husband The main expense of the wedding was the telephone call — $l5O.
