“Secrets of the Deep"

■ A new five-part series 'probing the mysteries of the last frontier and the role that 'the oceans and seas will play in man’s future, begins oh TV2 on Tuesday night. “Secrets of the Deep” is the latest in a long awardwinning list of motion pictures and television credits for the famed Italian producer, director. writer, oceanographer, explorer and pioneer underwater cameraman, Bruno Vailati. A true man of the sea, Vailati shares an Oscar of the Sea award with Jacques Cousteau and Thor Heyerdahl. He has taken camera crews all over the world in an oceanographical occupation he describes as “the hobby of a lifetime.”

Acting as a guide for the series is the astronautaquanaut. Scott Carpenter, I himself an underwater expert. I One of the first seven 'astronauts. Carpenter served ias a back-up pilot for John i Glenn during tne preparation I for America’s first orbital flight. He flew the second American manned orbital flight in May, 1962. and piloted his Aurora 7 spacecraft through seven revolutions of the earth.

In 1965, Carpenter became the first astronaut-aquanaut when he joined the U.S. Navy’s Man-in-the-Sea programme and spent 30 days living and working on the ocean floor at a depth of 205 feet.

In tonight’s episode, entitled “Shark the Unknown.” "Secrets of the Deep” looks at this feared sea creature of I which so little is yet known. The programme examines the ways in which the shark can benefit man, as well as harming him. Unusual underwater footage is shown of the Great White Shark, tiger sharks and whale sharks in their natural habitat, all over the world.
