Record or not?
Has Ken Wadsworth (left) set a new record tor dismissals by New Zealand wicket-keepers — or is he still two short of John Ward's tally? Ward dismissed 256 batsmen. When Wadsworth caught Warren Stott at Lancaster Park on Saturday he brought his total to 254.
But three of Ward’s dismissals were in New Zealand's match with Northamptonshire in 1965. when he was not in the eleven, but was invited to keep wicket hv the opposing captain, Keith Andrew, when the New Zealand
'keeper, Artie Dick, was injured.
In Rugbv football, a player coming on as a replacement is credited with having plated a first-class match. In cricket he is not So in a sense. Ward did not exist when he dismissed the three Northants batsmen.
There is no authority to which an appeal can he made on a point of cricket statistics. So whether Ward had 256 or 253 is a matter of opinion. Th< probability is. however, that Wadsworth will soon pass the figure of 256. and put a close to discussion
