Tangiwai recalled

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. New Zealand’s most tragic Christmas was again commemorated early on Thursday morning when a wreath was thrown from the northbound Northerner express into the Tangiwai River in the central North Island. Organised by the Taihape branch of the Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s, and Cleaners’ Association, the wreath-throwing was in memory of the Christmas Eve crash in 1953 of a WellingtonAuckland express train into the Tangiwai River after part of the bridge had been swept away in a sudden flood.

Of the 285 people on the train, 151 lost their lives. Each year since, a wreath has been thrown into the river from the passenger train travelling over the river bridge on the date nearest the anniversary of the tragedy.
