Maui rig shelters from wind

December 28 Ihe huge Maui oil platform and its support craft were forced out of the South Taranaki Bight on Christmas Day by gales and high seas and sheltered in Golden Bay. Plans to up-end the platform tower over the drill site had to be postponed. By this morning, however, the weather looked reasonably settled, and the tower, towed by two salvage tugs, moved out of Golden Bay. It is due to arrive at the doll site off the Taranaki coast by midday tomorrow From then on. the upending of the tower, on what will be the site of New Zealand's first off shore oil and gas production platform will depend entirely on the weather Indications tonight were that the operation could take place on Tuesday, said a spokesman for Shell B.P and Todd Oil Services. Ltd. Checks on the tower after it returned to Golden Bay on] Christmas Day showed that it had not suffered any damage from its buffeting during the first tow.
