Chile frees prisoners
(N.Z Press Assn—Copyright) SANTIAGO, Dec. 19. President Pinochet of, Chile has announced that 160 political prisoners, including five Roman Catholic priests, will be freed immediately, to mark Christmas, and that they will be : allowed to remain in Chile. The five priests were arrested by the secret police in November, on charges of complicity with Left-wing guerrilla groups. The order to free the prisoners came only 24 hours after Chile’s Roman Catholic Church hierarchy had said that the military Government would be petitioned to grant amnesty to political prisoners “in those cases in which it is possible.” The Government said last month that there were then 587 political prisoners in the country. The number of people being processed by military courts, and those already serving prison terms, brings that number to around 4000.
