Regatta hit by weather

A strong head-wind on Lake Hayes, near Queenstown, made the water unrowable for much of the invitation regatta during the weekend, and Avon’s senior four and eight were unable to get much-needed competition. Only six races were held on Saturday before the rowing was called off, and the club’s No. 1 four, which stayed on an extra day in hope of a race, was frustrated further when the regatta was cancelled at 7 a.m. yesterday. The cancellation was doubly annoying for the Avon four, national champion for the last two years, because the $9O prize money for first place ($4O for second) would have comfortably covered boat trailer expenses for the week-end. Some consolation was found in the wins by the club’s maiden double (Athol Earl and Ray Flanagan), by a distance, and senior double (Jeff Lopas and Grant Nolan), by a length. The two novice crews also qualified for the unrowed final, but the junior four was beaten into a place.
