Nelson boat wins title
The South Island P class sailing championship which was held off Timaru harbour in gale-force winds over the week-end was won by D. West in Metro from Nelson. Second equal were J. Swanson (Picton) in Pisces and R. Coutts (Dunedin) in Tikitak.
Placings on handicap over the series were: Tikitak 1, Metro 2, Pisces 3. The series was conducted by the Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club and attracted 35 skippers. There were some excellent performances. Placings in the invitation face were: Tikitak 1, Echo (A. Roberts, Christchurch) 2, Metro 3. In the afternoon the yachtsmen experienced varied conditions. A 20-knot nor’wester, decreasing to almost a flat calm, later switched to an 18-knot nor-easter. Twenty-three of 25 yachts finished.
Placings were: Pisces 1, Metro 2, Silver Bird (I. Stringer, Dunedin) 3. The Sunday race was cancelled because of gale-force winds.
Placings in the third race were Tikitak 1, Metro 2, Kimber (M. Brown, Picton) 3. Running Bear (P. Hoskins, and G. Taylor, Christchurch) won the first race and the R class championship. Chela (I. and C. Jackson, Christchurch) was first in the second race from Freedom Streaker ( J. lheson and I. le Page, Christchurch).
