Blaze threatens plantation
Firemen fought for two hours and a half yesterday to control a blaze which threatened to engulf a plantation near Coronation Hospital in Centaurus Road.
Less than a quarter of the 15-year-old trees in the 4000 sq. m plantation were destroyed, but no other property was damaged. Three engines from the Spreydon, Woolston, and Christchurch Central fire stations were called out about 2.10 p.m. Efforts to control the fire were hampered by a strong southerly wind and the large amount of dry, windblown timber lying in the plantation, a brigade spokesman said.
The cause of the fire was not known last evening. '
