Schools as earthquake risks
Sir, — The Education Department has stated that only one school would be replaced in the Christchurch region this decade. It must be inferred from various statements that this is the Boys’ High School, although several other local State schools (e.g. Philipstown) must be regarded as earthquake risks. Is this suddenly urgent demolition an attempt to destroy a bastion of tradition, or a result of indecent haste by the board of governors to have a new building erected by the date of the school’s centennial in 1981? — Yours, etc., V. F. WILKINSON. . December 13, 1975.
