History of Riccarton
A book on the history of the Riccarton borough is being researched and written by Mrs S. Penney. The Riccarton Borough Council on Tuesday evening granted Mrs Penny $5OO to help in the research of the bok. A further grant of $5OO will be considered in the 1976-77 estimates. Cr D. A, Anderson, chairman of the finance and bylaws committee, said that the books would be sold for about $6 each. ‘‘There will be a limited edition of 1000, and they will be sold locally, as well as to libraries, and schools,” he said. The whole project of collating the history is expected to cost about $6OOO.
Obituary Constance McLaughlin Green, whose history of Washington won a Pulitzer Prize in 1963, has died from a heart attack, at the age of 78 Miss Green described “Washington: Village and Capital. 1800-1878,” as “an interpretative, rather than a comprehensive, foolproof history.” Her other works included “Eli Whitney and the Birth of American Technology,” “The Church on Lafayette Square, 1815-1970,” and “The Secret City.” The latter described race relations in Washington. — Washington.
