Prison term reduced

A rehearing on a charge of theft resulted in a man having his prison term shortened by four months by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Magistrates Court yesterday. On October 14, James Michael Thomas, aged 22, was sentenced to six months imprisonment on a charge of stealing $35 from a till at the Gresham Hotel on September 1. He was also given a concurrent term of two months gaol on two charges of breach of probation. An application for a rehearing resulted in the police asking that the original charge be amended to read $2, rather than $35. The maximum penalty for this offence is three months gaol. Thomas pleaded guilty to the amended charge and was convicted and discharged yesterday. , Counsel (Mr A. C. ! Hughes-Johnson) said that Thomas had almost been | two months in prison already. His wife was preg!nant and he would appreciate it if he could be out of I prison in time to be with iher for Christmas.

The Magistrate said that he took into account that the defendant had alreadyserved almoat two months in prison.
