z p A. Staff Correspondent) HONG KONG. Deceml>er 8. Hong Kong's biggest sailmaking business, owned by the former New Zealand champion yachtsman, Neil Pryde, has made world sales worth about s2m this year. “This represents a market value of about s4m because we sell only to wholesalers,” Mr Pryde said. Major markets include North America, Scandinavia and Australia, and sails are also sold in Europe. South America, Asia, and Africa. There are no sales to New Zealand because of import restrictions, but Mr Pryde said he had built up a useful business selling Hong Kong made equipment and fittings to New Zealand sailmakers. His factory in the New
Territories has a three-storey sail-loft covering 23,000 sq. ft, and it employs more than 170 workers. Mr Pryde, who has represented Hong Kong in the Olympic Games and the 505 world championships, began operations in Hong Kong in 1970 and his factory can now tum out about 5.7 m sq. ft of sails a year. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council describes this as the largest; production in the world. The company, Neil Pryde, Ltd. uses dacron from the United States and tetoron from Japan for its sails.
