Hard time ahead for universities
i t.V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 9. Victoria University has joined others in New Zealand in predicting that they are in for a hard time next year. Both Auckland University and Canterbury University have already said that they will have to control academic development to keen inside their block grants from the University’ Grants Committee. Victoria’s Vice-Chancellor (Dr D. B. C. Taylor) said todav that the university faced “a rugged time” for the next four years. The first casualties of the belt-tightening might be the library and science departments, which could receive grants only matching this year’s spending and taking no account of Drice-rises and students’ increases next year. “We have yet to analyse the grants in detail,” Dr Taylor said, “but next year looks the hardest.” Spending by the library’ and science department would, hopefully, match this vear. “This will be really a cut in spending because of inflation next year.’’ Dr Taylor said.
