U.N. move vetoed

The United States has 'vetoed a United Nations SeIcuritv Council draft resolution which would have condemned Israel for “premeditated” air attacks on Tuesday |of last week on Palestinian ,camps in Lebanon. I The United States barred the proposed resolution after failing to win Council ap'oroval for amendments to it. “in the name of sanity and peace.” condeming all acts of especially those resulting in the deaths of innocent civilians, asking all' narties t 0 the Middle East! conflict to abstain from further acts of violence, and urging all sides to avoid actions which could endanger the Geneva peace negotiations.
These amendments received (only seven votes, including i those of all the Western Powders on the Council, and nine (were needed for approval. The main resolution then received 13 “yes” votes from the Council’s 15 members, but the Americans vetoed it. Iraq did not take part in the vote.
Countries voting for the draft resolution included France. Britain. Italy, and Sweden. The draft had been nroposed by Guyana, Iraq, Mauritania. Cameroon, and Tanzania.
