W. Indies to use speed

(N.Z Press Assn— CopurlaMl BRISBANE.

The West Indian cricket selectors handed out a strong warning yesterday that they would go against all predictions in a bid to match the much - vaunted Australia!) speed-bowling attack in the first test which will open at the Brisbane Cricket Ground today. The team manager (Mr Esmond Kentish) significantly named the 21-year-old tour “baby,” Michael Holding, high on the list of the twlve names from which the test side will be chosen. The West Indian squad is: Clive Lloyd (captain), Gordon Greenidge, Roy Fredericks, Lawrence Rowe, Alvin Kallicharran. Deryck Murray, Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Lance Gibbs, Bernard Julien, and Inshan Ali. Holding, the form bowler of the tour with 6-60 against New South Wales to his credit, is yet to earn a test cap. But his natural pace and enthusiasm might lift him into the West Indian team to back up his team-mate, Andy Roberts, in the expected show-down .of pace with Australia’s Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee. Both teams came through wind-up practice sessions unscathed yesterday, the most pleasing aspect for Australia being the “primed to the minute” look about Thomson. Thomson is eager to kill the widely-held theory that Roberts is at present the world’s most fearsome fast bowler. So supremely confident is Thomson that he has challenged Roberts to accept a $5OO bet about which of the pair takes more wickets in the six-test series.
