Timo Makinen, of Finland, has won the British Royal Automobile Club rally for the third straight year. The 37-y ear-old driver arrived at the finish line at York with oil spilling from his Ford Escort. The leak had seriously threatened his chances of victory during the closing stages. Makinen won by 64 seconds over his Escort teammate, Roger Clark, of Britain, who had been gaining on him fast on the final leg from Scotland. Another Ford Escort, driven by Tony Fowkes, of Britain, was third.
