Bauxite project approved

Joint Government parties in Australia have approved draft legislation for a start on a sAustlooom bauxite and alumina refining project on the Aiirukun aboriginal reserve in Northern Queensland.
The bauxite deposit at Aurukun, on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula, is south of Weipa deposit mined by Comalco, Ltd.
A consortium of companies is involved in the project. Tipperary Corporation, incorporated in Texas, and registered tn Queensland; Billiton Aluminium (Australia), Ltd, a Dutch company associated with Royal Dutch Shell; and Aluminium Pechiney Holdings Proprietary, Ltd. Pechiney is a major French company which has,an interest in the Gladstone refinery belonging to Comalco. Under the proposed agreement. the companies must build the refinery in Queensland, and the Aboriginals on the reserve will benefit from the project in a profitsharing scheme.
