Micron qualifies for Cup

Micron made a successful final attempt to qualify for next Tuesday’s $50,000 New Zealand Cup when he strode through the slush to win the Kaikoura Cup yesterday. He won by half a length from Bomber Bill, with the others well beaten.

There was merit in Micron’s win as he tangled away and lost at least 60m. He gradually made up his leeway, taking the lead from Glentohi with about 700 m left.

Micron strode clear by some three lengths racing to the straight where he was still under a good hold. He looked to be winning easily 100 m from the line, but Bomber Bill made a belated bid and ran the favourite to half a length. Bomber Bill’s placing was his first showing of form for some time and this was no doubt helped by the state of the track.

The pacemaker, Glentohi, battled on for third three lengths away, shading Gay Rose and Final Decision, which pulled hard for most of the way. He looked a distinct prospect when he improved inside Micron when the favourite moved up inside the last 800 m. but he was struggling on the home turn.

A six-year-old stallion by Lordship from Monapat, Micron is raced in partnership by Messrs Doug Goslin and Ted Graham. He has always shown more ability than most in his class, but he has not been a reliable beginner. He won his first race at Kaikoura two years ago. He is in great heart at present and will not be a forlorn chance in next week’s big race over 3200 m. The Kaikoura Cup was robbed of considerable interest by the late scratching of Robalan, the early favourite for the event. His trainer, Denis Nyhan, decided not to risk him on the heavy track and he will complete his preparation for the New Zealand Cup at trials to be held at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening.

SECOND LEG Armbro Tryax, which graduated from maiden company at this meeting 12 months ago, gained her fourth success for her Belfast owner-trainer, John Thompson, when she caught the pacemaker, Perfect Kid, in the Hotelkeepers’ Handicap.

Doodie Townley gave the Armbro Del four-year-old a perfect run behind Perfect Kid after leading for the first 700 m. She was pulled out early in the run home and gradually wore down Perfect Kid to win by a length. Perfect Kid held second by half a length from Nimble Yankee, which raced very wide in the straight after being in the open for the greater part of the race. Mecca Maid was beaten off fourth, ahead of Bojold.

The second favourite, Streaker, bounded at the start and lost a lot of ground. He finished eighth. Cedar Valley, which was having only his second race start, relished the extremely heavy track conditions by winning the Kevin Knowles Memorial Handicap. Barry Hamilton kept Cedar Valley back beyond the middle of the field for most of the way. He switched him wide in the run home and he gathered in the leader. Scotch Wallace, with about 100 m left and went on to win comfortably by two lengths and a half. Scotch Wallace attempted to lead for the last 700 m, and battled on for second, with Dutch Command coming again to take third from Battle Lord and Lord Moose. Daring Donna and Lord Moose both gave ground at the start. Daring Donna broke again later. Cedar Valley is a promising gelding by Out to Win from Garrison Star. He is trained at Irwell by Hamilton, who races him in partnership with his wife. He will probably race next at the Cup meeting. (TJk.B. coda: GT.) (Weather rain; track heavy.)
