High prices on marae

(N.Z. Press Association/ AUCKLAND. Maori families wanting to buy their Orakei marae State houses face a staggering price tag if their wish is granted. These houses are on some of Auckland’s most desirable real estate, near Bastion Point and with panoramic views of the harbour and a large part of the city and North Shore.

Last week a similar house :in an adjacent street sold for $41,000. One property developer has been heard to offer a straight swap of a four-unit block of flats worth $lOO,OOO for any property in Kitemoana Street, where the marae houses have been sited. The Government valuation of four taken at random varied from $29,000 to $34,000. These were estimated in July, 1974 So far, there is no sign that anyone will be allowed to buy the houses. The Hous ing Corporation policy is that these houses are not for sale, in order to preserve Their .identity as Maori housing. Any change of policy as a result of the recent report on the social welfare needs of Maoris and Islanders, which called for a relaxation of the no-sale policy, would require a Government decision.
